Sri Lankan rice and curry is like the superstar dish of the country. It’s basically a plate of delicious, fluffy rice (they use samba or kakulu varieties) served with a bunch of different side dishes, which they call curries. You usually get at least three curries, but five is even better. One of them is usually fish or meat-based, and the other two are veggie-based.
When you order rice and curry at Mermaids Kitchen, you’ll also get some extras like sambol (a tasty relish), a gravy with spices and coconut milk, mallum (chopped leaves with coconut), and some crispy fried goodies like papadams. Our dishes are a classic homemade meal and you can find it on pretty much every restaurant menu in Sri Lanka, but once you have ben at Mermaids Kitchen you will taste the difference.
Sri Lankan people eat rice and curry all the time, mostly for lunch. But some folks have it for dinner, and very rarely for breakfast. And get this – they eat it with their hands! How cool is that? So come try and taste it yourself.
